Grading / Calificacion

Daily/Weekly Points:
*** Students can earn a maximum of 50 points per week. The way this breaks down is on regular days: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday a daily grade of  10 points will be awarded based on the following factors: 1) Being on Time & in the student's assigned area, 2) participation. Participation includes but is not limited to being physically active, dressing out, and having a positive attitude. Individual class contributions and/or any special talents will be acknowledged for class credit and awarded points towards final grade as agreed upon between student & teacher conferences.  On Blocked Days, Wednesday & Thursdays point values are doubled due to the longer class period(s). Thus, students can earn up to 20 points on which ever days they are assigned to dance class. This totals 50 points per week.
Participation:
Students are expected to FULLY participate in every aspect of the dance program.  The only legitimate excuse for failure to participate is illness or injury. In such case, I require a signed note from a doctor, or parent/guardian. Dance is as much about Fitness as it is about Fun. In this course, we will follow the Dept. of Health recommendation: 30-45 minutes per day of “vigorous, cardiovascular exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle.” You will be expected to participate 100 % to the best of your ability with whatever clothes you have prepared.
Dressing Out
We will practice a “relaxed” Dress Code for Dance class. However, Dress code is as follows: Dancers are required to wear comfortable, stretchable clothing that they can move freely in. Suggestions: Yoga pants, Leggings, Sweats, loose shorts. Not having the appropriate clothes for class is not an excuse to sit-out.  With privilege comes responsibility, students are expected to use their own judgement to determine if they need to prepare extra clothes to “dress-out.” Students will be expected to Dance in whatever clothes s/he has prepared. Acceptable Shoes: dance sneakers, tennis-shoes, dress shoes and jazz shoes are all okay. PLEASE, NO FLIP FLOPSTHIS IS FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY.  Points will be deducted from the daily grade for not participating due to improper dance clothing, or shoes.  Dress code will be enforced beginning the 2nd week of school.

Positive Attitude
v  Attitude & Effort: As part of their daily points, students will be evaluated on whether or not they display a “positive attitude.” This will be based on:
ü  Following directions & respectful behavior
ü  Commitment to completing tasks and assignments
ü  Effort and pride you put into the class

If students are not displaying proper behavior or dancing to their full potential, they will lose their points from their daily grade. Many people may have the ability and creativity to pursue excellence in dance; however, only those who are determined and dedicated will successfully achieve their goals. Having a positive attitude in dance will allow you to be open to try new things with new people.  Important: Because dance often involves partnering and working on group projects, an atmosphere of cooperation and respect for others is essential. When one student chooses not to follow directions and/or becomes disruptive, it affects the whole class, not just them. Please remember, in dance class we are a community. Establishing this kind of classroom environment will ensure that everyone will have fun in the process of learning.

Performance Requirements
Dance is a “Performing Arts” class. Students are required to perform in front of an audience at least once per qtr. Performances WILL BE a percentage of your FINAL GRADE each quarter. Your ideas are always welcome. If you have an idea for a performance, please talk to me. However, If you do not like performing in front of people, you may want to consider another course. My feelings will not be hurt. I will do everything I can to support you in finding a course that makes you happy. That being stated, I am flexible and there are several options for performing for a “live audience.” Just to name a few:
·         Flash Mob during lunch (outside on Pueblo Plate form)
·         School assembles
·         Dancing for Teachers at Wednesday meetings
·         In-class mini presentations for your class period (parents and family welcome)
·         Putting on a show at school dances
·         Formal Dance Recitals on big stage in Auditorium
·         “Dancing With Our Pueblo Stars”
·         Leading/Teaching an in-class workshop
If you would like to perform more than once per quarter, you’re certainly welcome to do so. Any additional performances will count as extra credit towards your final grade.
Performance Dates:  (TBA) Every effort will be made to inform families in advance, if when students plan to perform in class, or at a school assembly. I anticipate our 1st performance to be around Sept/Oct.
Test/Projects
The Tests/Quizzes will have both Written & Physical Performance components and will be based on class lessons. The exact date will generally be announced to students in advance, however the teacher reserves the right to administer pop-quizzes.  Points will be awarded on any written quizzes/exams which will contribute towards your final grade. However, the teacher reserves the right at any time to change the point value of any exams.  In some cases, a project, research paper, or performance may serve in place of a test.  The teacher reserves the right to determine the assignment on a case by case basis.
